About the Role:

Reporting to the Manager, International Student Supports, the International Student Advisor, Immigration is responsible for providing comprehensive immigration advice on a range of issues including study permits and visas, work authorization, post-graduate work permit, permanent residency, and compliance with immigration regulations to international students, visiting scholars, faculty, and staff. The Advisor will work in collaboration with a team of international student advisors to ensure international students are well-prepared for their student experience.

The International Student Advisor, Immigration will: 

  • Provide regulated, accurate and timely, one-on-one, immigration information and advice on study permit/visa requirements, regulations, and procedures;
  • Manage complex and escalated situations and cases involving students’ immigration status and how it relates and impacts their academic, social, and cultural needs;
  • Liaise with Immigration, Refugees, and Immigration Canada (IRCC) on behalf of Brock students and visiting faculty;
  • Act as the primary contact with external partners related to immigration, and settlement;
  • Remain current with changing immigration regulations, policies, and procedures and disseminate relevant information to the international student and scholar population;
  • Research and monitor immigration announcements and policy changes, providing recommendations to policy or practice to ensure the University remains in compliance;
  • Collaborate with University leadership, faculty, and staff to identify and analyze emerging issues and opportunities;
  • Lead the development and/or maintenance organization, promotion, and delivery of immigration workshops;
  • Work in conjunction and collaboration with the Brock International team in order to maintain and enhance the services and programs;
  • Assist with the on-boarding of new international students, by acting as a resource for international students and addressing their questions or concerns.

Key Skills and Experience:

  • Undergraduate degree in a related field;
  • A valid G class driver’s license and an acceptable driver’s abstract;
  • Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultant (RCIC) designation with the College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants (CCIC) or Regulated International Student Immigration Advisor (RISIA) Certificate;
  • Relevant experience in international student advising, immigration law, or immigration advising in a post-secondary environment;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada policies and regulations affecting international students and their family members;
  • Knowledge of University governance, academic regulations and academic structure and program requirements;
  • Proven ability to deal with sensitive and complex situations, ensuring confidentiality with information that has financial, political, regulatory and reputational implications;
  • Strong communications skills (listening, verbal, written), relationship-management skills, and professional public speaking ability;
  • Excellent interpersonal and consultative skills to provide advice and support to program participants from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds;
  • High degree of initiative, and independent decision-making, critical thinking, judgment and decision-making skills.

Preferred or Asset Skills: 

  • Experience working in post-secondary student programming; and
  • Ability to speak multiple languages.

Salary and Total Rewards: 

  • Job Grade K, Salary Scale ($57,400-$98,400);
  • Target Hiring Range: $57,400-$62,000;
  • This position includes full comprehensive benefits including tuition waiver.
