The Department of French, Hispanic and Italian Studies at the University of British Columbia (Vancouver) invites applications for a part-time Lecturer position in Portuguese. The start date is expected to be either July 1, 2026 or September 1, 2026.

The successful candidate will be responsible primarily for teaching a variety of undergraduate courses on Portuguese language and Lusophone content courses. Portuguese language will form the core of the teaching duties, but courses in our Romance Studies program will be taught in English. Other responsibilities may include: curriculum development; advising undergraduate and graduate students interested in studying Portuguese abroad; organizing visits by authors and guest lecturers as a potential supplement to Portuguese course offerings; contributing to the Department’s cultural and student engagement activities; and helping to promote and develop Portuguese Studies at the University as a whole.

The holder of the lectureship will teach six 3-credit courses each academic year, ordinarily scheduled during the Winter session (September-April) and the first Summer session (May-June), as assigned by the Head of the Department. The six-course (18-credit) teaching load aligns with a 75% part-time Lectureship appointment in the Faculty of Arts.

Requirements: University degree equivalent to a Canadian PhD in linguistics with a strong focus on Portuguese. Candidates must have experience teaching in related fields at a Canadian post-secondary institution for a minimum of 2 years. They must have exceptional written and verbal communication skills in Portuguese, as well as high proficiency in oral and written English, and must be able to demonstrate competence in second-language pedagogy, technology-assisted instruction, and knowledge of current issues and methods in teaching Portuguese as a second language. They must have a good understanding of CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) teaching and assessment practices and how it relates to language courses in a Canadian Higher Education context. They must have the ability to teach courses about global Lusophone topics for the Romance Studies Program. Desirable qualifications include curriculum development and a commitment to teamwork and service in a Canadian institution.
