As the primary point of contact within the Division, and working closely with the Division Lead, the Manager will initially identify the structure required for establishing a sustainable funding model for the Division and working towards coordinating UBC and any external resources required to support development. The Manager will support academic innovation through curriculum management, program development, and research management. The incumbent will be responsible for working with Division members to lead the planning and execution of curriculum, research projects, and programs from initial conception to completion and be responsible for Faculty level program management. With this responsibility, the Manager will guide program development and evaluation, identify barriers, and assess financial impacts collaborating with faculty, program leads, and staff across Department of Orthopaedics and the University.The primary goal is to garner assistance in developing a business plan to establish a funding model (consistent revenue stream) to help sustain innovative clinical practice and research programming for the Division. This unique position requires personnel with knowledge in the areas of orthopaedics, research methodologies, and academia, and one that can engage in considerable networking to support the build of this Division.Organizational StatusThe Division of UEx nested under the Department of Orthopaedics and is composed of approximately 20 members. In 2023, the Division of Distal Extremity separated into the two separate divisions: Foot and Ankle and Upper Extremality. The Division of UEx is committed to a strategic vision of excellence in UEx surgery and the development of a provincial resource for complex UEx problems, inclusive of teaching, research, and innovation. Following the UEx Spring 2024 strategic planning meeting, various resources were identified as necessary to support the actionable priorities for implementing this vision. Specifically, a new staffing position requiring funding by the Department is proposed. This would be a key professional team member of the Division of UEx reporting directly to the Division Head and working closely with and under the broad direction of the Department Head, as well as working cooperatively with Department staff, individual Division Members, and affiliated programs to ensure all objectives, projects, and timelines are met. As well, the incumbent would liaise regularly with allied professional groups bridging the needs in each of the three pillar areas, Research, Education, and Clinical Practice.The UBC Department of Orthopaedics has an international reputation for excellence in teaching, research and patient care. Our mission is to create knowledge, advance learning, and improve musculoskeletal health for the community at the provincial, national, and international levels. The Department consists of seven clinical divisions and a division of orthopaedic research, and is comprised of 200+ academic and clinical faculty who choose to contribute large blocks of their time to advance knowledge in the areas of clinical orthopaedics, musculoskeletal science as well as applied biomedical engineering and related basic science areas. This focus allows the Department to be at the forefront of exciting new developments in the areas of minimally invasive joint replacement, improved bone healing, advanced techniques in spinal surgery, innovative arthroscopic techniques, and improved biomaterials and implants.The incumbent will report to the Division Head, Upper Extremity in the Department of Orthopaedics.Work PerformedResearch InnovationOversee the recruitment of clinician scientists and supports researchers’ tools and skills, and developing strategies to increase clinician involvement in researchPrepare professional development strategies for clinicians not currently conducting research, provides placements for student research assistants, and collaborates with allied scientistsManage the research process by working with the individual members on the continual process and maintenance of research:Manage project meetings, draft materials, and write reports, technical documents, and grant applications and ensure ethical and privacy compliance through audits and necessary approvals.Provides resources and training to clinical staff, supports stakeholders in adhering to research protocols, and manages the financial and budgetary aspects of research projects.Consult with Division members to create internal policies and administrative procedures, ensuring compliance and efficiency in applications and processes.Advise on research projects, collaborates on development of study materials, and performs data collection, analysis, reporting to promote the Division’s objectives.Works with the Orthopaedic healthcare community and MSK organizations like BCOA and COA to develop and implement best practice pathways for UEx conditions.Establish and pilot quality improvement projects with significant patient impact and relevance to the Division, actively seeking input from patients and clinicians.Oversee visiting faculty organization, stay informed on research and Orthopaedic trends, seeks partnerships for growth, and establish the Division’s social media presence through platforms like LinkedIn and Instagram.Identify opportunities to for manuscript submissions, presentations, and/or poster communicationsExpand the research database for epidemiological purposes, ensuring consistency in data collection language to align with academic standards for impactful publication.Develop a foundation to support the sustainability of the DivisionInvestigate exemplar programs, liaise with University and Hospital Foundations for awards, bursaries, and donations, and explore sponsorship opportunities with industry suppliers for research support.Identify grants obtained by the orthopaedic community and explore avenues for lateral movement of existing funds to support new research projects.Collaborate with ChangeMark group and investigates funding for new research studiesProgram Development and ManagementManage key educational initiatives for diverse learning populations (e.g. undergraduates, residents, fellows, and healthcare practitioners) within the Division of UEx, ensuring comprehensive education plans and initiatives are effectively executed.Assist with the creation, planning, and implementation of academic programs, including lectures, mentorships, fellowships, clinics, and social media, tailored to the needs of various learning populations.Provides strategic advice in complex academic projects, defining objectives, timelines, and resources, while working with faculty and senior leaders to assess program viability and offer recommendations.Oversee program evaluations, develop performance metrics, analyze the financial and operational impacts of educational programs, and present findings to leadership.Advise on curriculum proposals, manages standardization of curricular tools, and support the development of curriculum policies, procedures, and processes, while fostering collaboration with faculty and other UBC offices.Consequence of Error/Judgement
The Manager, Academic Innovation & Program Advancement is required to participate in and conduct all work-related activities in an ethical manner and to maintain strict confidentiality where required. Exercising poor judgment can adversely affect the viability and validity of the project(s) to be implemented. Errors in data, reference materials or publications if detected, would result in delays, requiring additional resources to obtain or validate data. Inability to establish and foster effective working relationships may affect the integrity of the program and the successful and timely completion of projects.Supervision Received
The Manager, Academic Innovation & Program Advancement will report to the Division Head in the Department of Orthopaedics. Work is reviewed periodically to assess the validity of recommendations and the achievement of defined goals.Supervision Given

Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline.
