We look forward to making the future TOGETHER!*We operate in a hybrid environment, with three days per week on campus.Position purpose:Provides strategic leadership at different levels of the organization to ensure sound management of Faculty of Engineering financial resources, which involves applying appropriate accounting control and administrative policies to needs assessments, financial plans, economic conditions, financial systems, and accounting practices and procedures. Develops and implements accounting controls and administrative policies appropriate to different management levels within the organization and oversees accounting operations, financial planning and the production of reports to ensure compliance and positive audit findings.In this role, your responsibilities will include:1. Responsible for planning (input and income statements), analysis, control, interpretation, and presentation of financial information. This includes consolidation and producing operational variance reports for senior management, analyzing complex accounting operations, budget process and forecasts, and special projects.
2. Provides expert advice to Faculty of Engineering members on accounting operations and associated policies and procedures so that internal control systems work efficiently and effectively. Responsible for training the Faculty’s support staff on financial matters and as such, oversees and provides guidance to Faculty of Engineering staff members on their fund management duties.
3. Conducts technical and complex research on accounting, finance and other matters, and gives clear guidance to senior management.
4. Develops and implements guidelines and financial procedures, ensuring that all the financial operations comply with the policies, guidelines and laws governing the University of Ottawa.
5. Monitors and controls financial operations relating to managing the operating fund, trust funds, as well as the special and self-financed funds, ensuring that they comply with the regulations and procedures governing the University of Ottawa, granting agencies and donors. Provides ad hoc analyses and advises support staff on the analysis and financial control systems. Responsible for final approval of transactions.
6. Manages the accounting operations (accounts payable and receivable). Conducts detailed balance sheet analyses and corrects any problems in a high-volume accounting operations environment.
7. Manages budgets for major or special projects involving capital investments or construction grants.
8. Plans, organizes, and controls payroll management activities to ensure complete and accurate processing, including scheduling, compliance with collective agreements and other contractual agreements, payroll accounting, and compliance with the various legal and tax provisions applicable to compensation. Plans, implements and controls all activities involved in compensation to minimize errors and the associated financial risk.What you will bring:A professional accounting designation (CA, CMA, CGA)A minimum of 10 years in a senior management positionA minimum of 10 years’ experience in managing human and financial resourcesBilingualismKnowledge of business administration processes and practices, including financial planning and budgetingKnowledge of financial planning principles, policies, procedures, and practicesKnowledge of the various legal and tax provisions, and regulations and procedures, governing compensation.Knowledge gained from working in a university setting and in a setting with several unions.Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and how they apply to financial statementsKnowledge of the Faculty’s structure and governanceThorough knowledge of financial systems Ability to plan, prioritize and organize a varied and heavy workload to meet strict deadlinesAbility to prepare and analyze financial statements and solve accounting problems in a timely mannerAbility to give expert advice and recommend improvements to financial management practices and proceduresAbility to work under pressure and adapt to shifting priorities, all while providing staff with support and guidanceAbility to communicate well both verbally and in writingAbility to lead teamsAutonomy and great discretionClient service-orientedAnalytical and critical thinking skillsTeamwork skills#LI-HybridKey Competencies at uOttawa:
