What you’ll be doing

The CIBC Legal Department provides legal services to all lines of business within CIBC and assists in identifying, assessing and mitigating legal risks. The Managing Counsel role at CIBC leads a team of legal professionals accountable for providing a wide range of legal services and advice to business and functional leaders across the organization. Utilizing strong independent judgment, broad-based legal knowledge, and a high level of professionalism, the Personal Banking legal team proactively works with employees at all levels in designated lines of business focused on Retail products as well as functional teams impacted by a regulatory framework. The Personal Banking legal team members are experts in understanding and delivering proactive legal and regulatory advice to Canadian Retail banking to assist in the development and delivery of products and services as well as provide solution oriented advice to mitigate risk. The Managing Counsel also provides legal expertise to executive and senior leadership on complex and/or sensitive issues in both the project context and in unique situations.

How you’ll succeed

  • Legal advice & counsel – Provide proactive, responsive legal advice grounded in the Bank Act and consumer protection laws and Codes of Conduct on complex issues primarily to related to CIBC’s Canadian retail banking business units with a specific focus on Cards to assist with the identification and mitigation of legal, regulatory and reputational risk in both end to end projects as well as on unique situations. You will also oversee and be directly engaged in the negotiations and preparation of the commercial arrangements that support the Cards business including network agreements along with other commercial agreements related to the Personal Banking business as needed. You will keep apprised of developments in the Cards industry including regulatory, case law and commercial developments and take a lead role in the identification and assessment of any impacts such developments may have on CIBC. You will identify frameworks for analysis, work closing with CIBC’s lines of business from product and service development to execution; collaborate on regulatory developments and proactively resolve legal issues that may have significant organizational implications and prepare practical recommendations to assist CIBC in addressing the identified issues.

  • People management & leadership – Lead the performance, development and professional growth of lawyers in a manner that enables Canada Legal to deliver its value proposition to be professional partners, proactive counselors and knowledgeable advisors.

  • Relationship management – Manage partnerships and relationships across CIBC by integrating into the business, facilitating open communication, maintaining and improving levels of internal business partner satisfaction, anticipating business needs and proactively offering legal advice including delivering training.

  • Team engagement – Work collaboratively in a large legal team setting with other lawyers and CIBC Legal Department leaders, act as a team and operate in a managed matrix which is a hallmark of CIBC Legal Department’s strength in the market.

Who You Are

  • You can demonstrate experience in and have proven track record of providing excellent legal judgement and deliver legal advice and prepare commercial agreements that involve complex issues and mitigate legal and reputational risk. You have significant relevant experience gainedata bank, a similar large organization or a top tier law firm including having strong commercial drafting experience in a regulated industry. People management experience is an asset.

  • You’re a certified professional. Successful Candidate must have been called to the Bar in Ontario and are a member in good standing.
