  • Recruitment range: $106,897 – $133,623 maximum starting salary is determined through knowledge, experience and internal equity.
  • Performance range: starting salary to max of $153,666 is available through annual performance increases.

Job SummaryReporting to the Director of Observatory Physical Operations, the Observatory Principal Engineer operates within Observatory Physical Operations and provides leadership in expanding and maintaining ONC’s complex subsea observatories. The Observatory Principal Engineer also oversees the engineering design and documentation process as it relates to regulated work, and acts as the Responsible Registrant for ONC (add EGBC). The Observatory Principal Engineer will lead and plan at-sea expeditions for major infrastructure changes and experiment deployments, a multi-departmental effort that requires a strong background in engineering and project management.Job RequirementsEducation
The successful candidate will have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in engineering; however, a master’s is preferred.Required Experience

  • 10 years of engineering experience
  • 5 years of marine operations experience.
  • 5 years of direct or indirect supervisory experience.
  • 5 years of project management.
  • Must be qualified to register as a Professional Engineer in the Province of BC
  • Large marine deployment experience.
  • Experience in the use of ships in construction and/or maintenance projects.
  • Experience negotiating and managing a variety of types and sizes of construction and/or maintenance contracts.

Condition of employment

  • The ability to obtain a Government of Canada Secret Level II security clearance is a requirement of the position.
  • Must meet the physical demands of the job, which include the requirement to work on vessels operating in coastal and offshore waters.

Assets

  • 1-2 years working in a university research environment.
  • Specialization in ocean technology.
  • Experience with construction and/or maintenance projects with a significant equipment development component; management and facilitation of multiple design groups of technical experts.
  • An equivalent combination of education, experience, and training may be considered.

Working Conditions

  • Leads expeditions on vessels operating in coastal and offshore waters where there is significant risk due to shipboard operations, physical and environmental conditions.
  • At-sea operations typically occur up to a four-week duration, for a cumulative total of 40 days/year, and may take place in conditions where there is a significant risk due to shipboard operations and inclement weather e.g. motion sickness.
  • At-sea operations are 24/7 and require the Observatory Principal Engineer to be on call to respond to urgent matters.
  • Work involves walking, talking, hearing, using hands to handle, feel or operate objects, tools, controls, or mobile equipment such as forklifts and cranes and reach with hands and arms. Vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • The physical demands include (but are not limited) to the requirement to push, pull, lift, and/or carry up to 40 pounds.
  • Due to the many deadlines that the Observatory Principal Engineer must accommodate in their work, both the at-sea work and necessary high level of quality assurance required for this position can be a source of significant mental stress, particularly in the lead-up to the expeditions.
