Job Title: Practicum Instructor EDBE 8P74 (IS) Year 2 

Compensation: 

• Effective September 1, 2024 – $3546.56 per quarter course (98 hours nominally)
• Effective September 1, 2024 – $7,093.12 per half course (195 hours nominally)
• Effective September 1, 2024 – $14,186.24 per full course (390 hours nominally)

Overview: The EDBE 8P74 Professional Collaborative Communities instructor will professionally bring to life the content and knowledge by implementing curriculum and teaching approaches that engage students in conversations on educational inclusion and equity and pedagogy. Practicum Instructors (PI) are expected to be aware of a variety of critical practices relevant to their field/subject area that can support all students, attend to our unconscious biases, and encourage inclusivity. In addition, PIs will exemplify competencies relevant to specific methods and foundations courses being taught while modeling the Standards of Practice and Ethical Standards of the Ontario College of Teachers. The PI will also serve as one of the Practicum Advisors for the teacher candidates in the practicum courses. 

Duties 

Become familiar with Brock University policies and adhere to them.  

Complete required Brock instructor’s online tutorial prior to first class.  

Use a provided Brock email address for all Brock-related communications with teacher candidates and program personnel;  

Act as instructor and be responsible for the successful delivery of all aspects of this course which consists of 5 x three – hour sessions scheduled across the fall and winter terms; 

Manage instructional contact time and non-contact time. Contact time includes all classes as scheduled. The non-contact time includes preparation of lecture materials, managing the learning management system(s), student consultation, marking or grading, holding office hours, and other course administration as may be required such as attending required meetings such as beginning of program meeting, sessional instructor meetings and relevant professional development. 

Adapt instructional and assessment strategies to accommodate diverse learning needs.   

Advise, mentor, and provide feedback to teacher candidates in relation to course concepts/content and Professional Standards of Practice and Ethical Standards of the OCT;  

Work collegially and collaboratively with other team instructors, course team lead(s) including attending team meetings and debriefings.  

Work collegially and collaborate/instruct with the Practicum Advisor; 

Collaborate with Placement Office in arranging for/setting up placements; 

Mentor teacher candidates for practicum placements (I/S) with reference to the Teacher Education Program Handbook.  

Coach/mentor teacher candidates and work with associate teachers.  

Visit and liaise with associate teachers and principals when needed.  

In school boards where in-person evaluations are required, travel to schools will be mandatory 

Respond to associate teacher’s correspondence in a timely manner.  

Participate, as warranted, in the Department’s referral procedures as outlined in the Teacher Education Program Handbook.  

Evaluate teacher candidates during the practicum.  

To submit final grades by deadlines.   

Qualifications:  

• Normally, a minimum of 5 years recent teaching experience;
• Normally, a master’s degree or other recognized specialization in the field such as a 3-level specialization;
• Must hold an active membership in the Ontario College of Teachers and be in good standing at the time of appointment;
• Must hold a valid Driver’s License and pass a police vulnerable sector check (PVSC).
• Demonstrated leadership in curriculum and/or education;
• Exhibits contemporary knowledge of educational theory and pedagogy including assessment;
• Knowledge about social justice and equity through anti-racist and anti-oppressive lenses;
• Experience facilitating challenging conversations and difficult topics with adult learners.
• Preference may be given to applicants with experience with teacher candidates or other adult learners;
• Competency in using educational technology and platforms for content creation, course management and delivery;
• Experience with blended modes of course delivery; or
• A combination of education and experience matching and/or exceeding the above

Fall – September to December 

Winter – January to April 

Spring – May to July 

Summer – July to August
