Probationary Instructor in Anishinaabemowin, Department of Anthropology

The Department of Anthropology at The University of Winnipeg invites applications for a probationary appointment at the rank of Instructor in the field of Anishinaabemowin language studies. Subject to budgetary approval, this position will commence as soon as possible. Salary levels will be commensurate with qualifications and experience, and in accordance with the University of Winnipeg Faculty Association Collective Agreement.

The University of Winnipeg is located on Treaty One Territory and the National Homeland of the Red River Métis, in Wiiniibak, Manido Abi. We acknowledge these are the ancestral lands of the Anishinaabeg, Anisininew, Ininiwak/Nehethowuk, Oceti Sakowin/Dakota Oyate, and Michif (Métis) Peoples. This territory is also a place of significance for the Denesuline and the Inuit, some of whom have been living here for generations.

Qualifications and Responsibilities

While applicants with a Master’s degree are preferred, candidates with other educational qualifications, and candidates with lived experience are also encouraged to apply. Applicants need to be able to converse with, and work effectively with primary language speakers of Anishinaabemowin in the Anishinaabemowin language. Applicants must have expertise in second language teaching methods and experience engaging in Anishinaabe culture and community. Experience in curriculum and materials development, teaching adults and the understanding of learners’ unique needs in immersion language programs is an asset.

Preference will be given to qualified candidates who identify as Indigenous.

The successful candidate will help develop courses and teaching materials, and teach Anishinaabemowin courses.

Applicants are requested to submit a complete application that will include (all documents in PDF):
– a cover letter
– a current curriculum vitae including teaching experience
– a document describing their relationship to the Anishinaabemowin language, and Anishinaabe culture and community, including the contributions their own teachers made in their life and how they carry on what they learned from them into their own teaching today
– names and contact information of three references who can speak about the applicant’s teaching effectiveness in Anishinaabemowin immersion (referees will be contacted soon after the closing date if the applicant is short-listed)

In the later stages of the selection process, additional steps supporting the substantiation of Indigenous identity will occur for individuals who are invited to an interview with the selection committee.

The selection committee will begin reviewing applications on Tuesday, November 25, 2025 and will continue until the position is filled; full consideration is assured for applications received by Monday, November 24, 2025.
