This position requires in-person work on the University of Alberta and University of Alberta Hospital campuses.PositionThe Neuro-therapeutics and Clinical Pharmacokinetics (Neuro-CPK) Laboratory, led by Dr. Sherif Mahmoud, BSc (Pharm), MSc, PhD, FNCS, is a research lab within the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Alberta. The Neuro-CPK lab focuses on developing improved methods for treating patients with traumatic brain injuries, strokes, status epilepticus, and ruptured brain aneurysms. This is accomplished through various research methodologies, including critical appraisals of clinical trials, systematic reviews and meta-analyses, the design and execution of retrospective and prospective observational studies, pharmacokinetic studies, and clinical trials.Additionally, the lab develops techniques to support clinical research. Most of the prospective studies are multicentre, with the University of Alberta Hospital Neurosciences Intensive Care Unit (Neuro ICU) serving as the primary centre.Duties

  • Oversee research administrative tasks, including multi-centre study communications, ordering supplies, reviewing invoices, assisting with ethics, contracts and operational approvals
  • Ensure confidentiality of study participants, including safe storage of study files and materials
  • Prepare and deliver study sampling kits and appropriate paperwork to the Neuro-ICU
  • Collect frozen samples and deliver them to the laboratory on time
  • Conduct screening and recruitment of potential study participants at the University of Alberta Hospital, including obtaining consent, regained capacity consent and follow-up screening
  • Update and maintain screening and recruitment logs
  • Complete lab duties as required e.g. assistance with lab experiments and maintenance

Qualifications

  • Completion of a high school diploma is required; Bachelor’s degree in a Science related field is preferred, equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Google Apps required
  • Must be comfortable interacting directly with patients, their families, RN’s and physicians
  • Experience working in a lab environment and conducting/contributing to research studies is an asset
  • Experience with AHS information systems (Connect Care) is an asset
  • Ability to be flexible, assist on multiple projects and successfully prioritize multiple responsibilities
  • Work in a professional and ethical manner, in accordance with policies and procedures
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Will be required to complete ethics, confidentiality and lab training
