Our commitment to employment equity helps achieve inclusion and fairness, brings rich diversity to UBC as a workplace, and creates the necessary conditions for a rewarding career.Job SummaryA Research Assistant is required to assist in research into race and racism in the law and the practice of immigration detention.The Research Assistant will work with Professor Arbel on her SSHRC funded project on race and racism in immigration detention. The Research Assistant will review and analyze existing literature on immigration detention, specifically focusing on race and racism, and as well, conduct semi-structured interviews with research subjects. The Research Assistant will organize and analyze the data, and together with Professor Arbel, co-author research output that synthesizes this work. The Research Assistant will work with Professor Arbel to supervise student researchers and work with the Project’s advisory panel to develop the project as it unfolds.Organizational StatusReports to Professor Efrat Arbel, Faculty of Law.Work PerformedThe work will include, but is not restricted to, the following:research into the law and practice of immigration detention;research into how Canadian law understands and constructs race and racism;research into race and racism are manifest and understood in Canada’s immigration detention regime;research and analysis of relevant statistics about immigration detention;conducting research interviews with research participants (with the approval of the UBC Ethics Board), coding and analyzing interview transcripts;drafting and co-drafting written deliverables in the form of academic articles, blog posts, reports, and other forms of research outputcreating and co-creating public-facing forms deliverables such as art, photography, film, and other forms of creative outputthe dissemination of the project’s research output through online and in-person forums.Consequence of Error/JudgementWhile the work may be of a complex nature, tasks are assigned and the incumbent plans andschedules his/her own work.Supervision ReceivedWorks under general supervision; receives detailed instructions on the assignment of new dutiesand thereafter only on new or unusual problems.Supervision GivenMay oversee and direct the work of one or two employees at lower classifications in which casethey are responsible for the accuracy, production, and control of the work unit.Minimum QualificationsCompletion of a JD degree and a minimum four years of related experience; demonstrated expertise in legal and sociolegal research. Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own. Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion
