Working for the Department of Agricultural, Food & Nutritional Science

The department of Agricultural, Food & Nutritional Science (AFNS) offers research and teachings related to the fields of Animal Science, Food Science and Bioresource, Human Nutrition and Plant Biosystems. AFNS offers undergraduate Bachelor of Science degrees in Agriculture, Animal Health, Agricultural/Food Business Science and Nutrition & Food Science each with a variety of majors. AFNS students can also pursue a course-based or thesis-based Master of Agriculture, Master of Science or a PhD.

Position

This position is designed for a highly motivated early-career researcher with a proven track-record of conducting interdisciplinary cereal research to further strengthen capabilities of the Cereal Breeding Lab (CBL) led by Dr. Gurcharn Brar of AFNS. The responsibilities will entail executing research activities across a multitude of projects requiring expertise on mendelian genetics, population genetics, genomics, molecular biology, and metabolite profiling. The incumbent will add additional strength to the CBL by conducting research to develop novel agronomic traits in wheat and barley, contribute to designing experiments and writing research grants, mentor students and staff, present research at national and international conferences, and publish research in peer-reviewed journals.

Duties

• Supervising support staff or Research Associates (Level 1)

• The incumbent will aid members of the group on projects with genetic and genomic components.
• The incumbent, at Dr. Brar’s discretion may serve as committee member for students requiring extensive research expertise of the incumbent.

• Oversee research activities

• The incumbent is expected to define research objectives, timelines, detailed experimental plans and execute research goals.
• Identify resources required and its timely communication to the PI to meet project deadlines
• The incumbent will collaborate with internal and external colleagues in consultation with the PI.

• Take lead on drafting research manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals, and present ongoing research in laboratory meetings, departmental seminars, and at national and international conferences and events.
• Along with the PI, identify key areas for future research and draft research proposals/grants, and at PIs discretion, serve as the co-PI on research grants.
• Act as a liaison with off-campus partners including collaborators and service vendors.
• Oversee data sharing through public repositories and ensure data sharing follow FAIR principles
Minimum Qualifications

• A Ph.D. in plant genetics/plant biology
• At least 3 years of Postdoctoral experience in carrying out cereal genetic and genomic research
• At least 3 years of experience working on genetics of cereal disease resistance such as rust
• At least 5 years of experience in genetic characterization of mendelian and quantitative traits in cereal crops
• At least 5 years of experience in statistical analysis of genetic datasets, including but not limited to implementation of mixed model, population structure and linkage disequilibrium analysis, and linkage analysis via QTL mapping and genome-wide association analysis
• At least 5 years of experience in molecular biology to carry out routine genotyping (PCR, gel electrophoresis), real time PCR, design and optimize transformation vectors, agrobacterium transformation in heterologous systems such as Tobacco and/ Arabidopsis, and protein analysis
• At least 3 years of experience working with untargeted metabolite profiling (e.g. LC-MS) datasets for genetic characterization of biochemical pathways

Preferred Qualifications

• Proven track-record of scientific publications with at least two lead author publications from Postdoctoral career
• Proven track-record of collaborations outside the home institute through co-authored publications
• Proven track-record of interdisciplinary research through co-authored publications with research groups outside of incumbents’ core skills in fields such as phenomics/image analysis
• Proven track-record of mentoring undergraduate, graduate, and staff during their tenure in previous role(s)
• Proven track-record of obtaining funds through competitive research grant(s) as a PI or co-PI
