The position is expected to start on July 1, 2025 at 0.4 FTE (or 16 hours per week) for 3-6 months with the possibility of extension subject to availability of funds.Candidates must be interdisciplinary social scientists with a focus on climate science and environmental policy making and analysis. They should also be knowledgeable about theories pertaining to upstream technology assessment and/or responsible innovation.The successful candidate will conduct research on the social impacts, implications and governing conditions as they pertain to marine carbon-dioxide removal (hereafter marine CDR). This program of research will focus on how and why different communities and/or social groups might or support, reject or remain neutral toward technologies aimed at removing and storing atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide.Minimum Qualifications– Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own– Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusionPreferred QualificationsThe successful applicant must have a PhD in a relevant environmental social science field, including an interdisciplinary degree or degrees in environmental sociology or psychology, social and physical geography. They should have proven experience in theory and methodological training in science and technology studies, perceived risk, and/or judgment and decision making. Both qualitative and quantitative and statistical skills are necessary, including experience with conducting interviews and running small group workshops through to knowledge and experience in survey design and decision analysis. They should also have extensive knowledge of current social work as it pertains to climatic solutions, climate-mitigating technologies, and the problems associated with both nature-based and technology-based options in general and specific to the current published literature on this area.Applicants should submit their CV including list of publications and the names of 3 referees through the UBC Careers portal.UBC hires on the basis of merit and is committed to employment equity.
