The post holder will support and work closely with Dr. Lori Daniels in developing and managing research activities related to applied fire ecology in sub boreal forests located in northwest BC. The post holder will collaborate with other research groups, communities, and governments (First Nations, Federal and Provincial).Qualifications
A PhD in fire ecology with 6 or more years of postdoctoral research experience with demonstrated aptitude for leading and co-authoring manuscripts and preparing funding applications and reports. Preference will begiven to candidates with experience in applied fire ecology (practitioner-level) and forestry in BC. Ability to articulate science clearly in a written form and a high degree of independence and self-organization are core skills for this post.Recommended qualifications
Experience as a certified fire practitioner, wildland firefighter and/or fire behavior analyst and fire effects monitor are an asset.Major responsibilities include

  • Writes significant portions of grant applications, including research proposals.
  • Makes intellectual contributions to grant applications and research projects.
  • Identifies opportunities for developing new initiatives, grants and projects that enhance funding of research in the program.
  • Develops and recommends project budgets, monitors expenditure of funds relative to budget, and ensures appropriate, transparent justifications for expenditures.
  • Leads or participates in the development and implementation of new projects (prescriptions and the development of co-created fire response plans).
  • Develops new research opportunities and recommends staffing and resource requirements.
  • Implements processes for research data management and analysis, including ethics requirements and data sharing agreements.
  • Assists with Research Ethics Board applications and amendments as required and ensures compliance with Research Ethics Board guidelines.
  • Manages and develops necessary agreements for the research program in conjunction with the UBC Office of Research Services.
  • Serves as a liaison between research partners and develops relationships with First Nations partners.
  • Applies prescribed fire in a collaborative setting and supports Indigenous-led fire stewardship.
  • Other work as assigned by the PI.

Decision making/level of accountability
Exercises professional judgement and works within scope of practice within the overall management of research projects. Accountable for the execution of all research activities, permits, ethics and data sharing agreements and supervision of technicians. Makes decision during the collaborative review of research agreements and is responsible for final research reporting requirements.Supervision received
Works independently, but work is periodically reviewed to ensure validity of recommends and the achievement of defined research goals.Supervision exercised
Provides direction and technical knowledge to partners, technicians and researchers. May manage staff and supervise students.
