The Department of Orthopaedics is seeking a part-time (0.6 FTE) Research Associate to lead various research endeavors in precision surgery and digital innovation under the department of Orthopaedics at UBC (Pediatrics), working closely with the Digital Lab and Department of Pediatric Orthopaedics at BC Children’s Hospital.The successful candidate will provide leadership in managing the assigned research program, including the development and coordination of research plans and establishing priorities and timelines for research projects. They will assist the Principal Investigator(s) in the conceptualization and development of research proposals, development of strategic work plans and setting of priorities and goals for the program. They will provide direction to the research team in conducting all aspects of research activities, including ethical integrity; ethical approval, recruitment, training and ensuring accuracy and timeliness of data collection, data management and data analysis. They will prepare reports, scientific publications, grants and dissemination activities pertaining to research findings. Manages research budgets and resources.The UBC Department of Orthopaedics has an international reputation for excellence in teaching, research and patient care. Our mission is to create knowledge, advance learning, and improve musculoskeletal health for the community at the provincial, national, and international levels. The Department consists of seven clinical divisions and a division of orthopaedic research, and is comprised of 200+ academic and clinical faculty who choose to contribute large blocks of their time to advance knowledge in the areas of clinical orthopaedics, musculoskeletal science as well as applied biomedical engineering and related basic science areas. This focus allows the Department to be at the forefront of exciting new developments in the areas of minimally invasive joint replacement, improved bone healing, advanced techniques in spinal surgery, innovative arthroscopic techniques, and improved biomaterials and implants.RESPONSIBILITIESReporting jointly to Dr. Anthony Cooper, Clinical Associate Professor and Dr. John Jacob, Senior Director, Applied Research & Innovation and Adjunct Professor, the incumbent will be responsible for:

  • Provides leadership in managing all aspects of research program including the development and coordination of research plans, and establishing priorities and timelines for funded research projects.
  • Liaising with various health care professionals, research collaborators and patient/parent partners as necessary.
  • Coordinates and develops knowledge translation activities including the preparation of manuscripts and comprehensive reports, briefing notes, profiling documents/communication and conference materials.
  • Supervising, training and assisting the junior research staff in preparing necessary research-related documents such as ethics approvals, grant submissions and abstracts for conferences.
  • Coordinating and developing grant applications.
  • Training and co-supervision of postgraduate students and research team members.
  • Maintaining finances for the research program.
  • Performs other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONSSuccessful applicants will have:

  • PhD in Biomedical Engineering, Digital Health or other related disciplines.
  • Five (5) years of related experience, including research project management working with multi-disciplinary teams or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Relevant research experience in observational and quasi-experimental designs, randomized control studies, registries, administrative data, and clinical epidemiology.
  • Computer literacy and experience required, including MS Word, Excel, Outlook, Internet searches, and STATA, SAS or R.
  • Excellent oral and written communication, interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to exercise appropriate tact, discretion, confidentiality and good judgement in all matters.
  • Ability to work effectively, independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Ability to interact productively and professionally with a wide range of collaborators.
  • Experience in project management and grant writing.
  • Ability to thrive in a high pressure, fast-paced and demanding team environment.
  • Drive and enthusiasm, to both lead and work as a member of a multidisciplinary team
  • Excellent methodological skills.
  • Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own.
