Here’s the scoop – Summary
The Health, Safety, and Environmental Manager (CAN) will be a role model for safety working at our state-of-the-art facility in Acheson, AB. As a Health, Safety, and Environmental Manager, you will be offered a great opportunity to affect and make a difference, working closely with production and management, and through your coaching and mentoring to embed a strong safety culture throughout our facility. Responsibilities will include training employees in safety management best practices and providing day-to-day guidance and advice.
What a typical day looks like
Ensure compliance with the Company’s policies, practices, and procedures related to Health and Safety, Food Safety, and the Environment
Provide leadership and vision for future growth and development by helping Operations Leadership ensure employees are informed, aligned, and accountable.
Provide leadership and facilitate the smooth operation of the Occupational Joint Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) Committee.
Provide guidance, support, and oversight to HSE-related teams in executing their roles and responsibilities
Identify HSE coaching opportunities throughout the facility, offer yourself as an HSE mentor, and actively participate in improving Champion Petfoods’ culture with leadership and those on the front line
Provide technical expertise and support for implementing and maintaining HSE programs/systems in coordination with P&O at Champion Petfoods (Examples: Hazard Identification, Behavior-based Observations, Hazard Assessment documentation, Inspections, Near Miss Reporting, and Incident Investigation)
Partner with HSE professionals and teams to develop and improve manuals, policies, and procedures
Develop and implement safety-related training materials
Oversee Workers’ Compensation Process
Monitor and measure the effectiveness of all safety programs and documentation
Collaborate with management to identify and address all Health and Safety gaps
Conduct and lead incident investigations ensuring causes, immediate actions, and appropriate corrective actions, using the hierarchy of controls, are identified and implemented
Implement Champion Petfoods HSE practices, policies, and plans
Communicate legislative changes to team members, operations leadership, and employees, supporting and leading full compliance with OHSE legislation at all levels
Provide necessary training, leadership, and organization
Assist P&O with the orientation of new employees and contractors as required
Be available on a regular basis for evening or overnight shifts
Perform other duties as assigned
What you’ll bring
Preferred formal training and certification such as:
Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) certificate or diploma
Canadian Registered Safety Technician (CRST) designation
Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation
5+ years of experience as a Safety Leader in a manufacturing environment
Experience in research, analysis, interpretation, and implementation of safety regulations, standards, and best practices as they pertain to Champion Petfoods operations
Effective and clear communication and interpersonal skills with a strong sense of professionalism and diplomacy
Strong negotiation skills with the ability to influence others and gain commitment
Highly motivated and proactive; eagerly accepting new challenges and working under minimal supervision with effective time management, organization, and prioritization skills
Direct experience assessing training needs, creating training materials to fulfill those needs, and then delivering the training using strong presentation skills and the ability to adapt to the audience
Motivated, energetic, goal-oriented, and a positive outlook is critical
Strong problem-solving, critical thinking, and analytical skills with the ability to quickly respond to emergencies 24/7
Ability to build and maintain lasting relationships with other departments, key business partners, and other stakeholders
Excellent coaching, mentoring, and development skills
Workers’ Compensation, Fit for Hire, and Modified Work process experience
Proficient with Microsoft Office
Project management skills
Working Conditions
Travel between facilities as required
Ability to work under pressure
Ability to physically inspect company property and assets, in order to meet occupational health and safety requirements
