What is the opportunity?

This is an exciting opportunity as a Senior Counsel, Capital Markets within the RBC law Group to provide legal advice and support to the global trading activities of the Fixed Income and Currencies businesses and to other businesses in Global Markets that transact primarily in derivatives. In this role, you will be a trusted advisor and guardian of the Bank by delivering highly specialized expert transactional and advisory legal services to, and manage legal, regulatory and reputational risks for, the supported businesses.

What will you do?

  • Primary legal support for the Fixed Income and Currencies businesses and to other businesses in Global Markets that transact primarily in derivatives. Understand the business and provide transactional legal advice in respect of the products and businesses that you support
  • Provide sound, creative and practical legal advice and regulatory and reputational risk analysis to the Capital Markets business and functional groups
  • Manage external counsel to identify appropriate resources for resolving issues and managing the quality and cost of services
  • Manage implementation of new regulations reflecting increased regulatory oversight from local and international regulatory bodies that affect supported businesses
  • Collaborate with Law Group lawyers globally and represent RBC on industry working groups.
  • Provide specialized knowledge and support for review of New Business Committee matters.
  • Ensure that decisions reflect appropriate consideration and resolution of legal and regulatory issues

What do you need to succeed?

Must-have

  • Bachelor of Laws or Juris Doctor from recognized law school and Called to the Bar of a Canadian province
  • Derivatives, secured lending and/or securities experience in an in-house legal department or law firm
  • Subject matter expertise in Capital Markets legal and regulatory issues
  • Demonstrated capability to work independently and collaboratively, including exercising good practical judgment
  • Ability to communicate clearly to senior business and functional partners complex legal issues and deliver prompt and effective advice and business-oriented practical solutions

Nice-to-have

  • Derivatives experience
  • Direct experience negotiating complex agreements under tight deadlines
  • Self-starter with ability to manage competing priorities and work in a fast-paced team environment
