Job Summary
The Senior Standards Engineer is responsible for the technical and regulatory requirements for engineering operations at CN. The role leads a team accountable for developing and maintaining engineering policies ensuring compliance with regulations, and leading track infrastructure assessments. Furthermore, the incumbent provides technical guidance and support to the field to ensure standards are being understood and met.
Main Responsibilities
Track Standards
· Lead the technical review and implementation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
· Represent CN on the American Railway Engineering and maintenance of Way (AREMA) Technical Committees
· Lead the review of standards documents to ensure alignment with the latest regulatory requirements
· Assist in the modernization of the track standards documents
· Assist in the update of track standards plans and recommended methods
· Conduct research on industry best practices
· Work with other departments to ensure new technologies and practices are incorporated to the scope of internal standards
· Maintain the track standards section of the Engineering SharePoint to ensure
up-to-date communication with the field
Regulatory and Compliance
· Create and maintain testing procedures to ensure that all materials to be used in the Engineering capacity meet standards and regulations
· Lead the team to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements as per our Safety Management System (SMS) obligations
· Lead the Engineering response on Transport Canada (TC) and Federal Railway Administration (FRA) system audits
· Work with regulatory affairs to manage CN’s responses to proposed regulatory changes
· Support field forces in responses to field audits conducted by TC and the FRA
· Write and update technical internal regulatory policies
· Maintain up to date knowledge of government regulatory requirements and polices which affect CN engineering
· Conduct field audits with Assistant Track Supervisors (ATSs) and Track Supervisors (TSs)
Capacity and Risk
· Lead the team responsible for representing engineering when conducting Risk Assessments
· Lead the team responsible for representing engineering when conducting track capacity reviews
· Assist the capital planning team on developing basic capital programs
· Assist in derailment investigations
Engineering Process
· Collaborate with other departments and stakeholders to identify data-driven solutions to improve efficiencies
· Develop innovative technologies and data that can be leveraged to improve safety, compliance, production, and reduce costs
· Analyze emerging trends from Automated Train Inspection (ATIP) and other data sources to identify improvements to processes and standards which can be adopted by field forces
Working Conditions
The role has standard working conditions in an office environment with a regular workweek from Monday to Friday. The role requires occasional travel (30%) across the network. Due to the nature of the role, the incumbent must be able to meet tight deadlines, handle pressure, and stress.
Requirements
Experience
Railway
· Minimum 5 years of railway experience
Education/Certification/Designation
· Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering
· Professional Engineer Designation (P.Eng.)

· Knowledge of track inspection, regulatory requirements and Systems, Applications, and Products (SAP)*
