Will you be part of it?The Department of Physics at the University of Ottawa is searching for a motivated individual to act as a Senior Technician to perform a variety of technical activities at the Metal-Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition (MOCVD) Facility in support of clients, including students, postdoctoral fellows, faculty members, and other scientific or engineering professionals. The Facility houses an Aixtron CCS3X2FT Close-Coupled Showerhead MOCVD system.Position PurposeReporting to the MOCVD Facility Advisory Committee, designs, applies and interprets a variety of complex analytical tests and research assignments according to specified experimental protocols, under general supervision. Responsible for training and supervision of junior staff and/or general laboratory management. Performs highly skilled technical tasks requiring extensive education, training and experience. Is often considered an expert in the field and is expected to keep abreast of techniques and developments in the field independently.In this role, your responsibilities will include:Translates product specifications in designing test procedures and standards.Recommends product or process changes to improve system performance or to better meet customer or other user needs. Selects and uses appropriate procedures, equipment and standards to meet needs of staff.Provides complex analysis of samples as part of a facility that provides an external service, using state of the art instruments with many cutting edge technologies.Works with professional staff in diagnosing causes of system, equipment or material failure using advanced testing methods and equipment.Acts as a consultant to external research facilities, to provide technical advice and/or complex analysis of research data, which may sometimes lead to joint authorship of scientific papers.Collaborates with others, internally and externally, in developing new techniques and conducting joint experiments.Performs film growth using the MOCVD system, trains approved clients including graduate students and postdoctoral fellows on MOCVD, providing consultation on the design of experiments, the development and revision of MOCVD film growth protocols.Provides technical consultation, advice and instruction to faculty members, researchers and graduate and postdoctoral students on the appropriate use, selection and modification of specialized techniques in area of expertise.Liaises with other technical experts and may be called upon to provide advice in own field of expertise.Carries out other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification.What you will bring:Minimum M.Sc. degree in natural/applied sciences or related engineering disciplines or an equivalent combination of education and experience.4 years of proven experience in thin film growth, preferably using MOCVD.Ability to coordinate workflow and use personal judgement (troubleshooting) in operating, training and maintaining MOCVD.Ability to handle dangerous materials, safely operate equipment, and prepare solutions and media.Spoken and written proficiency in English is required.
