Course Title and Code: CHM135H1S – Chemistry: Physical Principles

Course Description: This course is recommended for students in the life and health science programs. The course opens with an introduction to atomic theory; fundamental concepts of spectroscopy and chemical bonding are also introduced. After a brief review of reaction stoichiometries, the structure of matter – gases, liquids, solids and beyond – will be discussed. The solution state is then presented with an emphasis on the properties of solutions, including chemical equilibria in solution, particularly those of acids and bases. The course concludes with an introduction to the kinetics and thermodynamics of reactions of both chemical and biochemical interest.

Estimated Enrolment: 100 students

Estimated TA Support: 135 TA hours

In-Person lass Schedule: Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday (2:00 – 4:00 pm)

Sessional Dates of Appointment: July 1, 2025, to August 31, 2025 (0.33 FCE)

$6,242.21 for Sessional Lecturer I 

$6,554.32 for Sessional Lecturer I Long Term 

$6,680.36 for Sessional Lecturer II 

$6,815.57 for Sessional Lecturer II Long Term 

$6,839.42 for Sessional Lecturer III 

$6,976.21 for Sessional Lecturer III Long Term

Minimum Qualifications: A PhD in chemistry or a closely related field is required. Experience lecturing and/or coordinating laboratories in general or physical chemistry at the university level will be preferred.

Brief Description of Duties: The Department of Chemistry requires a sessional lecturer to coordinate in-person lectures for 4 weeks in CHM135H1 (Chemistry: Physical Principles) during the 2025 Summer session. Duties include the responsibility of effectively delivering the course in person with all of the attendant organizational issues of laboratory preparation and delivery, supervising and marking tests and exams, final course marks, course evaluations, holding office hours, and so forth.
