Course number and title: Sessional Lecturer – LHA1826H – Comparative Higher Education

Course description: 

This course provides an overview of the field of comparative higher education, beginning with perspectives from the different civilizations which fostered higher learning in the pre-modern era. It considers theories from comparative education and disciplines such as history, sociology and anthropology as they apply to understanding higher education in global context. It also takes both a regional and a thematic approach in looking at higher education across different societies. Themes covered in the course include gender in higher education, curricular patterns across different societies, student issues and the relation of higher education to the state.

Class schedule (Lectures): Monday 17:00 – 20:00, Wednesday 17:00 – 20:00, Online Sync

Sessional dates of appointment: May 1, 2025 to June 30, 2025

Salary:

Pay for half course, vacation pay included:

$9,457.90 – Sessional Lecturer I

$9,930.79 – Sessional Lecturer I – Long Term

$10,121.77 – Sessional Lecturer II 

$10,326.62 – Sessional Lecturer II – Long Term

$10,362.76 – Sessional Lecturer III

$10,570.02 – Sessional Lecturer III – Long Term

Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.

Minimum qualifications:

Candidates must hold a doctorate in Higher Education or a related field; have a demonstrated record of scholarship in the field of Higher Education and the field of the theory and methodology in Higher Education within the framework of comparative education; have practical experience related to the topic of the course; and have successful graduate teaching experience in the subject area of the course and a successful track record of teaching online, preferably using Canvas/Quercus.

Prepare, organize, and lead this graduate half course; be available to students seeking assistance between classes; and evaluate student work and provide students with feedback.

Preference in hiring is given to qualified individuals advanced to the rank of Sessional Lecturer II or Sessional Lecturer III in accordance with Article 14:12 of the CUPE 3902 Unit 3 collective agreement.
