Location – This role is in-person at North Campus Edmonton.
The Faculty of Education at the University of Alberta invites applications from qualified candidates for one (1) tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in K-12 Science Education, with a specialization in elementary science education. The successful candidate will join a Faculty where they would have opportunities to engage in thoughtful and critical scholarship alongside undergraduate and graduate students and internationally renowned scholars. The expected start date is July 1, 2026.
We seek candidates who are intellectually curious, excited about rigorous research and scholarship and its applications; committed to quality teaching and learning in face-to-face and online environments; engaged in service and professional development activities that advance science education locally, nationally, and internationally; and dedicated to supporting the University’s commitments to access, community, belonging, Reconciliation, and social justice.
Responsibilities
Teaching (40%)
The incumbent will be expected to teach, revise, and develop undergraduate and graduate courses in elementary science education and/or other areas of education that are delivered on-campus and online. Additional instructional duties include academic advising for course-based MEd students and supervising thesis-based MEd and PhD students.
Research and Scholarship (40%)
The incumbent will be expected to advance a program of funded research, publish research in peer-reviewed journals and other relevant sources, present at conferences, and otherwise contribute to the creation and dissemination of new knowledge in the area of K-12 science education. The College’s Office of Research provides various supports for faculty researchers.
Service (20%)
The incumbent will be expected to participate in service and professional development activities that advance science education locally, nationally, and internationally; and serve on committees within the Faculty and University.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
• Applicants must have completed a doctorate in Science Education or a closely related field. Doctoral candidates with a planned defense date prior to August, 2026 will also be considered.
• Candidates must have at least two years of relevant K-12 teaching experience.
• Applicants must demonstrate engagement in a research program related to science education.
The following are considered an asset:
• Evidence of successful science teaching at the elementary (grades K-6) level.
• Evidence of effective teaching at the postsecondary level, particularly in courses related to science methods or curriculum.
• Experiences with interdisciplinary and cross-curricular collaboration in K–12 science education.
• Evidence of collaboration in teaching and research contexts.
