Description and Qualifications
The Department of Aging and Family Science is seeking applicants for a tenure-track position at the Assistant or Associate Professor level, commencing July 1, 2026. The successful applicant will be required to teach on campus.
The Department of Aging and Family Science offers undergraduate and graduate programs and provides a supportive environment where faculty, staff, and students collaborate on issues related to aging, families, and care. The successful candidate will have a PhD. in Gerontology, a Social Science discipline with emphasis on Aging, or its equivalent. Applicants must provide evidence of research competence in the field of Aging/Social Gerontology with particular emphasis on the wellbeing of staff in health care.
The candidate for the Shannex Research Chair will be an excellent emerging researcher. This position will be located at the soon to be opened De Paul Long Term Care Centre where there is space in the new Shannex Centre for Workforce Wellbeing for a team of trainees working on research related to long term care (LTC). The candidate will be engaged in research regarding long term care including residents and care staff and their workplace context. Candidates may use a variety of quantitative and/or qualitative methodologies and will have experience working with large data sets and advanced statistical techniques. The successful candidate will have evidence of an original and dynamic research program appropriate to an early career scientist, a strong record of publications, a commitment to mentoring students, and will be expected to ensure funding success via application to Tri-Council and other agencies.
Applicants should also have documented, successful teaching experience within a postsecondary setting. Workload for the position includes research, teaching, curriculum development, and other department responsibilities, as well as collegial service to the university and external communities. Candidates should be prepared to teach a range of courses and topics (e.g., Introduction to Aging, Social Policies in Aging and Family Science, and Care Policies) within the undergraduate and graduate programs, supervise undergraduate and graduate student research, as well as enhance the Department’s links to community-based organizations working with the LTC sector, government, and organizations promoting older persons.

The Department is affiliated with the Nova Scotia Centre on Aging (NSCA). Through research, education and community engagement, the NSCA advances knowledge on aging to inform social policy and practice, and enhance the quality of life of older adults and their families. Founded in 1992, NSCA leads tri-council funded research initiatives as well as applied and policy research for federal and provincial departments and agencies.
