With Caring and Vitality as two of our core values at Lambton College, you know you’ll be joining a team of passionate and fun colleagues.About the Position:This is a permanent part-time (RPT) support staff Bargaining Unit position reporting to the Associate Dean, Academic Services working 12 hours per week at an hourly rate of $26.46The Trades Tutor provides tutoring assistance in math, electrical theory, and technical drawings to support students in various apprenticeship programs. The tutor works closely with students to improve their understanding of key concepts and helps them apply their knowledge to succeed in their coursework. This role is integral to enhancing student success, retention, and skill development within trades programs.In-Person and Workshop Support: The tutor will meet students in person in Skilled Trades Training Centre (STTC), typical meeting times are right after classes or during breaks.Resource Development: Develop and source Math and Electrical resources for students, including online materials, and maintain communication with faculty to stay updated on course requirements.Additional Support: Assist Tutor Services Specialist with organizing drop-in sessions, special events, and maintaining tutor records.Specific Accountabilities:

  • Provide one-on-one or group tutoring assistance to students in areas such as math, electrical theory, and technical drawings.
  • Support students with topics including Pythagorean theorem, algebra, trigonometry, stair and rafter calculations, fluid power, fractions, and electrical concepts (e.g., Ohm’s Law, power calculations).
  • Interpret and explain technical drawings, schematics, and blueprints.
  • Develop and source math and electrical resources for student use, ensuring alignment with course requirements.
  • Collaborate with faculty to stay updated on curriculum changes and course materials.
  • Assist with organizing drop-in tutoring sessions and maintaining tutoring records.
  • Work with students in person at the Skilled Trades Training Centre, typically after classes or during breaks.

Qualifications:

  • Trade Expertise: A tradesperson in a relevant field, such as an Electrician or Millwright, is preferred. Candidates with Red Seal certification or equivalent qualifications will be prioritized.
  • Experience: Previous experience tutoring or teaching math, drawings, and electrical concepts, particularly within apprenticeship programs, is highly desirable. Experience in a relevant trade is an asset.
  • Communication Skills: Must possess strong interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with adult students, support staff, and faculty, providing exceptional customer service.
