Posted: November 18, 2025
Deadline to Apply: Thursday, January 15, 2026

Located in downtown Toronto, the largest and most culturally diverse city in Canada and on the territory of the Anishinaabeg, Haudenosaunee and the Wendat Peoples, the School of Social Work in the Faculty of Community Services at Toronto Metropolitan University [www.torontomu.ca] (formerly Ryerson University) invites applications for two tenure track positions at the rank of Assistant Professor effective July 1, 2026 subject to final budgetary approval.

The School of Social Work acknowledges the contributions, lived experiences and remarkable resilience of Asian, Indigenous and Black-identified peoples who continue to seek liberation within the colonial project of Canada. We strive to be a leader in critical social work education, research, and practice that works against anti-Black racism and anti-Indigenous racism and advances anti-oppression, anti-racism, anti-colonialism/decolonization, feminism, anti-capitalism, queer and trans liberation struggles, issues in disability and Madness, among other social justice struggles.

The successful candidates will engage in a combination of teaching, scholarly research or creative activity and service duties while maintaining an inclusive, equitable, and collegial work environment across all activities. Teaching duties will entail teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels, supervision of students and curriculum development. While all applications are welcome, the School of Social Work has a strong preference in this hiring round for candidates with expertise in critical quantitative research methodologies particularly in the following areas of scholarship:

Integrating clinical practice with anti-oppression practice in creative ways
Complex understandings of anti-oppression practice and emerging and disruptive technologies, including an understanding of the technical components as well as the critical impact of generative AI in social work practices across various fields
Climate justice, climate disasters, community crisis intervention and practices
Community organizing and/or social movement-based social work practice (local and global)
Michif and francophone realities and experiences; diasporic and transnational francophone experiences; and/or local and Canadian francophone realities

Candidates must have an earned doctorate degree or be close to completion (within one year of the employment start date), with at least one degree being in social work (BSW, MSW and/or PhD).

In addition, successful candidates must present evidence of:

a strong emerging scholarly research that is current, innovative and impactful as evidenced by, but not limited to, peer-reviewed publications, working papers, public policy contributions, presentations at academic conferences, community and professional work, grants, research related awards and other writing or creative production that contributes to the visibility and prominence of the discipline.
potential for teaching excellence at all levels of the undergraduate and graduate programs as evidenced by a teaching dossier that includes a teaching philosophy statement, experience with course and curriculum review and/or development, examples of best practices in pedagogy, including effective use of classroom technology and any experience with experiential learning, sample syllabi, strong teaching evaluations, teaching awards, and other relevant achievements in teaching;
a commitment to our values of equity, diversity, and inclusion as it pertains to service, teaching, and scholarly research or creative activities, including a demonstrated ability to make learning accessible and inclusive for a diverse student population; and
an ability and willingness to contribute to the life of the School of Social Work and the University through collegial service.

Our committee recognizes that scholars have varying career paths and that career interruptions can be part of an excellent academic record. Candidates are encouraged to provide any relevant information about their experience and/or career interruptions.

This position falls under the jurisdiction of the Toronto Metropolitan Faculty Association (TFA) [www.tfanet.ca]. Visit us at www.torontomu.ca/faculty-affairs to view the TFA collective agreement and a summary of TFA benefits. The minimum salary for the Assistant Professor rank is $103,916.30 per annum.
