Wilson College of Leadership and Civic Engagement was recently established at McMaster University to train future leaders committed to fostering a civic culture that engages all the diverse peoples that live within the lands now known as Canada. The College emphasizes the importance of collaboration within McMaster’s academic community and with local, regional and national leaders invested in realizing a Canada that values dignity, diversity and just communities; and that integrates education, research, practice and public engagement to advance our understanding of how to create a more robust and civic culture in Canada.

Wilson College invites applications for a position at the level of assistant professor (tenure stream) or associate professor (with tenure) appointed to an existing department in the McMaster Faculty of Social Sciences with affiliation to Wilson College. Teaching and service obligations will be split 50:50 between the two units. At McMaster, the Social Science departments are: Anthropology; Economics; Health, Aging & Society; Indigenous Studies; Labour Studies; Political Science; Religious Studies; Sociology; and the School of Social Work. The appointment is anticipated to begin July 1, 2026.

We welcome applications from those with research and teaching specialties that align with the College’s vision, including those that offer critical and interdisciplinary perspectives. We are particularly interested in applicants with strong academic achievements, given career stage, and interest in community-engaged or other applied research. Applicants are expected to hold a PhD at the time of appointment and to teach at the undergraduate and graduate level. In the College, we are interested in candidates who can teach WILSON 2D03: Deconstructing Leadership: Leadership and Diversity as part of their courseload and who have interest in teaching from diverse, critical perspectives. We are also interested in candidates with interest in experiential education. The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to the educational, research and service missions of their home department.

Wilson College offers an innovative Combined Honours BA degree in Leadership and Civic Studies and another subject (drawn from Social Sciences or Humanities). The degree provides students with interdisciplinary theoretical and practical knowledge that both informs and enhances a broad-based and critical approach to studying leadership and civic engagement. The Wilson College commitment to combining academic training with experiential learning equips its students with the skills necessary to work in and across all levels of government, the private sector, and civil society – to shape policy and public discourse to better serve the public good. In addition to the undergraduate program, the College supports a visiting scholars/practitioners program to bring a diverse group of individuals to campus to share their experiences and knowledge with students, faculty and other members of the academy and community, and hosts annual lectures and other events to engage the public and to facilitate a strong intellectual environment to explore wide-ranging issues pertaining to leadership and civic engagement.
